I'm curious about other peoples' experiences with this, in particular, if there has been an instance where you preferred the translation to the original? On my end, for the few books I've done this for, the original is always better, without exception.

I’m not a strong enough reader in any of my second languages to do this, but i’ve read side by side translations before that were helpful from a scholastic point of view. Sometimes it’s nice to look at the translation to see how someone else parsed the information especially if the translator is someone with a more intimate understanding of the writer/writing. It’s also a good way to practice your language skills. I imagine the more fluent you are, the less helpful it would be, gaining less and less knowledge per amount of time spent reading 2x as much.
