Today, during my daily dose of doomscrolling, I was randomly reminded of the struggle that Cornell (from Normal People by Sally Rooney) faced while he was back in his town after attending the University. He was having a hard time managing his friendship with people that were so dear to him while growing up but now felt distant because of their reactionary politics. The distance, which felt huge, was of no fault of any particular person, simply because one had the opportunity to move and learn and while the other stayed back.
I am looking for similar books where the main lead has problems maintaining friendships because of their perceived "correct" politics. I am specifically looking for leads who leave their small towns to bigger and more cosmopolitan places, but also open to other plots if they touch upon this theme.
If anyone has any recommendations on these themes, i would appreciate it a lot. Thank you in advance!
