I’m watching the Walking Dead and I absolutely love the “we can make a life if we work together” thing they’ve got going on. I don’t mind some fighting, obviously that would be part of it, but I would love to read something that focuses on the intricacies of rebuilding society without modern amenities/government/whatever.

Station Eleven by Emily St. John Mandel. Also watch the show if you haven’t already.
One Second After. An EMP goes off and basically fucks up anything using electricity. Set in the mountains of North Carolina and covers a small town trying to hunker down and survive. Probably one of the more grounded take because there’s no big gimmick or anything. Just townspeople helping each other, dealing with death, and fighting off bandits.
Stephen King’s The Stand.
“World Made By Hand” by James Howard Kunstler was pretty interesting. Also check out “A Canticle for Leibowitz” by Walter Miller Jr.
