I am in search of a book from my childhood. I got it in fourth grade from the book fair. 94-95 ish. I remember the cover being black with the blurry outline of a boy walking away seen from behind.
The book was about a boy who may have run away from home. I remember some scenes with a station wagon. He most likely ran away from home. At some point, he is living with some people, an older man. The man is what we now know to be a hoarse, I think. There is a scene where the boy has to find something in the garage or shed and the older guy he’s staying worthy knows exactly where everything is in the garage or shed. There were crutches and a tuba.
Other things I remember: setting seemed in USA. maybe a bit of a desert? At least when he is walking or maybe hitchhiking hiking after leaving his family? Maybe south west USA?
I don’t have much else to go on.
I’ve attempted looking up scholastic catalogs from 94/95.

What do you mean when you say, “The man is what we now know to be a hoarse”? Are you saying this man has like a rough character?
