books to write essays on & modern classics

I'm looking for two types of book recommendations.

1. Books that are very symbolic and thematically very dense; books that are famously analysed and good to ask questions about. Books like The Great Gatsby. I'm getting into literary analysis and want some books to try it out on.

2. I'm looking for "modern" classics like "The Bell Jar," "To Kill A Mockingbird," "Animal Farm," etc..
