Bonus points if it's science fiction, but I'm open to anything along these lines. Recently read Dune: House Atreides, and there's a "planetologist" character that gave me this itch.
the original, I mean, not the 112th sequel (113th, now?)

Anne McCaffrey had two books in the late 70s or 80s. She wrote both sci-fi and fantasy and this is sci-fi. The first was Dinosaur Planet and its sequel Dinosaur Planet Survivors. The main story is not just a new planetary environment but how it came about and why it had such a weird mix of species from different places is a main goal of the plot.
Another sci-fi series that is actually a spinoff of a more mainstream space opera series is David Weber’s YA series first book A Beautiful Friendship , MCs mother is a botanist working to modify earth planets, especially food crops for this relatively newly settled planet. What she learns is mostly about the ecosystem but again, the main plot is a bit different so I don’t know if this will suit. It’s. Spin off from his Honor Harrington books, set several hundred years earlier than that series. There’s also so new ecosystem stuff in the main series but it’s spread out over a bunch of books.
