I’m recently getting into reading (really just listening to books at work) and want a fun sifi book. I’ve read stuff like Armada which is good. I just finished “the great meridian” which is something else entirelyiykyk. Please fill the hole I have! Anything that’s futuristic or spacey. Though a detective one would be fun too! Thank you! 🙏

    1. Ilona Andrews Innkeeper Chronicles –A magic Inn, space werewolves and vampires, a lot of really unique aliens, mystery, romance, action, a fun and humorous series

Armageddon: The Musical by Robert Rankin – you get scifi, detective, funny, religion and maybe a talking vege, it has been a long time since I read this so not sure about the veg.

      But ultimate spacey …

      transformations by Neil Asher.

    3. Three by John Scalzi:

***The Kaiju Preservation Society*** is ‘a common man put into uncommon circumstances’. It’s fun and adventuresome.

***Redshirts*** is a satire of space-opera from the point-of-view of ‘expendable’ crew.

More high-tech than sci-fi but ***Starter Villain*** is the most entertaining book I’ve read recently. It’s a spoof of the early James Bond movies. A substitute teacher inherits his estranged uncle’s villainy which comes complete with a secret volcanic lair.

Yahtzee Croshaw’s ***Will Save the Galaxy For Food*** follows a space pilot scrounging a living after being put out of work by technology advances. The protagonist is a mashup of Han Solo and Crocodile Dundee.

How Much for Just the Planet? by John M Ford. It’s a Star Trek tie-in novel that’s basically a musical. The entire population of a Planet that has dilithium crystals gets together to discourage the Federation and the Klingon Empire from exploiting them.

+1 for Murderbot by Martha Wells! The first book is All Systems Red. It’s available on Kindle Unlimited and your library may have it as well.

The Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy by Douglas Adams. There’s also a radio play, TV show, and a movie.

Anything by Becky Chambers! I’ve also loved To Sleep in a Sea of Stars by C. Paolini, Saturn Run by John Sanford and Ctein, and (since you’re into audiobooks and this one is better as an audio imo) Project Hail Mary by Andy Weir.

“Artemis” by Andy Weir is basically a detective story taking place on the Moon 🙂 Others that may be up your alley:

      Plutoshine by Lucy Kissick
The Last Watch by J. S. Dewes
      Skyward by Brandon Sanderson

Ooh, for a space and detective story, you gotta check out The Expanse. There are a handful of novels (and novellas), but I was sad when it was over (because there was no more, not because it’s sad)

No Philip K Dick in the thread yet? Him and Vonnegut were my gateway drug into sci-fi.

VanderMeer is great for environmental sci-fi.
