Looking for a book that takes place in the 20th Century, preferably fiction.

To echo the title, I want a good gripping read that takes place in the 20th Century before 1980, fiction would be preferred. A few parameters here:

• No Stephen King
• Would like something that's entertaining, doesn't have to be a literary masterpiece, but if you have books that are both, please, suggest away.
• The time window for the setting would be roughly 1900-1980.
• Something that leans into the time period/society, so to speak, not something that just exists in that time period, if that makes sense.
