Just finished the game changers series and was told to read red white and royal blue but I really cant get into it

Any other suggestions would be welcomed. I'm a new reader and idk if I just cant get into a book where idk the characters. Most of the stuff I've read so far has been from shows/movies I've seen. (The books were out first but I watched the shows first). Just please don't recommend straight or poly romances, I know thats not my thing.
