Hello, I like to write a little as a hobby and I’ve got a story idea that’s basically a murder mystery. However, my only real familiarity with the genre is Sherlock Holmes, and I’d like to learn more about genre conventions and explore other ideas. I’d love to hear recommendations, especially stories on the shorter side.

“And Then There Were None” by Agatha Christie. She does a lot of nice mystery novels. Less than 300 pages. And “The Westing Game” by Ellen Raskin at a little over 200 pages. I read them both in middle school so they’re not too difficult.

    2. “And Then There Were None” is essential Agatha Christie, “Murder on the Orient Express” is also quite good. If you’d like to try something more contemporary/unconventional, “The 7 1/2 Deaths of Evelyn Hardcastle” by Stuart Turton is wonderfully entertaining.

It kind of depends when your story is set and what ‘kind’ of mystery it is before you can determine which mysteries to read to learn. Reading anything in the genre is going to help, but some books might be more helpful than others.
