I have started reading very recently and I’ve realized that I really struggle with heavy descriptions. When a book spends pages on "scenic dumps" – detailing a room’s layout or a character’s specific look – it pulls me out of the story because I find it difficult to visualize those details.
I am okay with books with deep symbolism. I actually enjoy reading analyses and discussions after finishing a book to fully grasp the themes, so I don't mind if the ideas are complex as long as the writing stays straightforward.
Some books that I have read recently and enjoyed.
- The Alchemist by Paulo Coelho
- The Metamorphosis by Franz Kafka
- Siddhartha by Hermann Hesse
I was not able to get through the below books because I found the writing too difficult.
- The Stranger by Albert Camus
- Stoner by John Williams

Try the short stories of Raymond Carver. They are famously pared back and concise. Where I’m Calling From has stories selected by the author and includes his best work.
