So recently I’ve been in a reading slump because I’m just tired of the books being published recently. They all seem the same to me with no depth and just stuffed with popular tropes just for the sake of having them. I decided to go back to what was popular in like 2016-2019 and read the poppy war trilogy and the bear and the nightingale and it was genuinely so refreshing to read a story done well. I want something that’s interesting and the story is well written with high stakes and emotionally charged. Romance is welcome, just needs to be done well and not predictable and all about smut

T Kingfisher has quite a few standalone fantasy novels that I’ve enjoyed. My favorite is Wolf Worm (publishing later this month, I received it as an arc and blew threw it), but I also liked Nettle & Bone, A Sorceress Comes to Call, and quite a few others. You really can’t go wrong with any of them.
The Everlasting by Alix E. Harrow – A romantasy but one of my top reads from last year. I found it very original.
The 7 1/2 Deaths of Evelyn Hardcastle by Stuart Tuton – This one is a fantasy mystery that really gets you thinking. Really enjoyed it.
The Warm Hands of Ghosts by Katherine Arden – also wrote the Bear and the Nightingale. This one is a historical fiction with magical realism.
Jim Butcher Codex Alera series,
There’s no romance, but sounds like you’d really enjoy the Sisters of Jade trilogy, by James Downe.
The Powder Mage Trilogy by Brian McLellan is amazing, has a very compelling story and I just loved the characters.
