Every new book I try to read feels like it somehow isn’t living up to my favorites, so I need some similar suggestions. My favorites are The Shining by Stephen King, Tender is the Flesh (and The Unworthy) by Augustina Bazterrica, and Episode Thirteen by Craig DiLouie. Please suggest similar book or any horror books you think are really good.

There are so many genres: slasher, supernatural, body horror, haunted house, gothic, folk, etc.

If you want something big by King, IT. If you want something short and to the point, Misery for full throttled, fast paced. Joyland for a more melancholic, coming of age story.

If you want something big, check out the The Terror, Summer of Night, or Carrion Comfort by the late Dan Simmons.

There’s Joe Hill (King’s son), check out NOS4A2, Heart Shaped Box, and his most recent is probably his best, King Sorrow.

If you like folk, The Ritual by Adam Nevill. Yeah, the last half or third gets kind of dumb, but the first half is enough to make up for it. Same for No One Gets Out Alive.

If you want trashy fun, pretty much anything by Richard Laymon or Bentley Little. For better, or worse, they’re very consistent in that regard.

Agree that horror is a vast genre, but I feel like the works of Alex North, and The Last House on Needless Street by Catriona Ward, would both jump-start a horror reading slump.
