My sister is looking for "a book where a woman is kind of going crazy and something is happening to her that she can’t explain."
I'm drawing a blank on anything that squarely fits here.
My only thoughts were:
Shark Heart (but it's not happening to her, and she kind of does know what's happening)
Carmilla (sort of?)
The Willows (so good but not a woman)

The Bell Jar???
Hmm maybe Brain on Fire
Bellevue Square by Michael Redhill absolutely fits the bill.
The Night Guest by Hildur Knútsdóttir might fit? It’s not the first book I would pick for a woman going crazy, and just what is happening to this character is a bit ambiguous, but it definitely fits the “something is happening to her that she can’t explain.’
Oh! Thought of another one. The Strange Case of Jane O by Karen Thompson Walker. A woman is going into fugue states of which she has no memory. It’s told alternately between her diary and her psychiatrist’s notes.
(I don’t want to spoil anything so I will just say that I can’t guarantee these books will both deliver on the going crazy part, but they do deliver on the thinks she COULD be going crazy and can’t explain things part)
We Used to Live Here by Marcus Kliewer
The Quiet Room
The Trick is to Keep Breathing by Janice Galloway! I highly recommend it and it’s been the find of the year so far for me. It gets tagged as a Scottish ‘The Bell Jar’ if that helps sell it.
The Haunting of Hill House perhaps?
Don’t Look Now by Daphne DuMaurier is excellent too
