Lately I've been loving books that use private eye framing but turn it a bit sideways: Dreaming of Babylon (Brautigan), Inherent Vice (Pynchon), Motherless Brooklyn (Lethem), New York Trilogy (Auster), and (this one isn't PI but similar feel) Cosmos (Gombrowicz). Looking for more in that vein – really well written, philosophical or funny, a unique spin on noir. Thanks!

You might like The Investigations of Mossa and Pleiti series, by Malka Older. First one is; The Mimicking of Known Successes.

Series features a detective and an academic, who have a past romantic relationship with each other. Setting is among several city/habitats in the clouds of Jupiter, connected by a monorail that circles the planet.

    2. The Manual of Detection by Jebidiah Berry is phenomenal—sounds like you might dig it. Noir crossed with the City of Lost Children or Dark World.

8th Detective—i forget the author, but a smart meta noir about (kinda) the unifying equation of detective stories. More commercial and readable than it sounds.

The 100-year Death by Ariel S Winter. A long one but I really loved it. Spans three generations while. continuing the same mystery. told in three very different noir styles—first it is modeled on George’s Simenon, then hammett then Chandler. the author is an impressive mimic/impersonator and pulls off something quite cool and different.

    3. You might enjoy Gnomon by Nick Harkaway, a trippy, detective/dystopia/near future sci-fi novel.
