Character driven short stories?

On a bit of a hangover after reading Paul Theroux’s “The Vanishing Point” and looking for something in the same wheelhouse. Someone suggested Dubliners but I couldn’t really get into it. So I’m guessing I maybe am looking for something a little more modern.

I enjoy short story collections in general and have enjoyed lots of Stephen King’s but not (specifically) looking for horror/supernatural as it was nice change reading something different.
