Books where the character makes a mistake and keeps lying/deceiving to hide it

I really enjoyed reading Yellowface by R. F. Kuang because it was so anxiety-inducing (despite the unlikeable narrator)! Looking for books with similar themes, preferably not in the fantasy/romance realm 🙂 TIA!
