So now that her children have grown, my mother finds herself with a lot of free time and not enough stuff to fill it. I’m a big reader but if I’m honest, our tastes aren’t the same and I don’t have much to recommend to her. I’ve got a lot of historic literature, classics, horror, feminist books etc. They tend to be quite long as well.
I’m looking for books that are short (100-250 pages). Her attention span for media consumption is low, so the stories would need to be rather gripping. And the language not too flowery or complex.
She enjoys drama, loves reality TV or shows like White Lotus. She watches them and makes lots of comments about human behaviour, the dynamics between people, the conditions of the shows that would cause them to act that way. She gets confused by very intricate plots in movies, so nothing like that either. I think simple but rich is the way to go.
For reference: I have a list of some novels I will recommend to her in the future if she does get into the habit of reading. On that list I’ve got a few Shirley Jackson novels, as I think she will love the twisted characters and plots. And also the My Brilliant Friend series, which of course is vibrant with complex characters and relationships.
I know she’d love the content of these books, but it’s the actual act of reading I need to get her into if that makes sense.
Open to any genres other than maybe Sci-Fi or Fantasy, since she’s never shown interest in those types of shows or films. Thank you!!!
