Hi!
There's this aching in my heart I haven't been able to satisfy so I went here.
I really like military settings and themes and I'd like to read something about queer soldiers (preferably mlm but honestly if you have any transmen or wlw suggestions I wouldn't mind either!). A while ago I read Between Ghosts by Garrett Leigh and I was left so disappointed I'm scared to pick up another book like it because I don't want to stumble into something I don't like again. Which is a shame! Because I yearn for queer military lit.
Any time period after say 1800 is what I'd like. It doesn't have to be a romance I'm perfectly fine with just a queer lead. Note I'm aroace and my biggest problem is sex that seems out of character. I'm also not looking for smut, if it's there I'd prefer to be under like, 20-25% of the book. I also don't like it when the romance is corny if I can call it that, your usual metaphors and teenager-like feelings that don't really make sense in the army. I'm not picky on the writing styles or pace, but diversity would be a nice plus if you know of anything like that.
I'm sorry if this is utterly specific/picky (first time on this sub, sorry), but because people here definitely read more than me and give more things a shot so I thought it'd try my luck. Thank you in advance : )

I havent read Between Ghosts. What was wrong with it?
Are you open to nonfiction? If so, try Allan Berube’s history book, _Coming Out Under Fire: The History of Gay Men and Women in World War II_.
Tanya Huff’s military Sci Fi might hit the right note for you. She writes people of all genders, orientations etc. into her Confederation universe, although the MC is in a hetero relationship in most of the books. They’re also just funny and incredibly readable.
In Memoriam by Alice Winn
The Charioteer by Mary Renault
I haven’t read it but I know that the pink marine by Greg Cope is a memoir about his experience being a gay man in the marines when it was illegal. So maybe not exactly the type of content you’re looking for but somewhat relevant. There is a Netflix show based on it that was a great watch as well but as I haven’t read the book I don’t have a good grasp on the adaptation.
