i’ve seen a lot of people talking about this book and i’m new to the whole book world, i’ve never been much of a reader but heavily picked it up as a hobby recently.
i’ve seen many different opinions on it, that it’s hard to understand, it’s too long, etc. but than i’ve heard it’s really good.
so i was just wondering if it is worth reading just once or if it’s overhyped and not worth the time?

I misread that as the alchemist.
Not really worth it unless you’ve enjoyed reading epic-length fanfiction in the past, since it delivers exactly that.

Depends on what you’re looking for. If you’re looking for romantasy with black and white characters, this might not be for you because ultimately it is a heavy dystopian war fiction where everyone is flawed to survive it. It’s long but there are 3 separate sections so you can take a break to digest the worldbuilding and complex characters.
I fully believe that the only people who love this book are the ones who read and loved the fanfiction it was re-tooled from. The original fanfiction had the entire HP canon to fall back on and is a pretty good fanfiction, but most plot points and characters in Alchemised remain unchanged from the original. This meant the author had to build an entire world and magic system separate from HP and give all the characters enough backstory that you care they have all been killed by the beginning of the book. It pretty much fails in the execution of all these elements.
It felt a lot like the magic and world building were created and designed to fit into the story the author wanted instead of having a rich world and magic system and then having characters react to situations that made sense within that world. This makes the story feel convoluted. I was constantly confused by why certain characters or the society acted the way they did but it was simply because the plot demanded it.
Honestly, if you want to know this story, I would recommend reading Manacled instead. As a standalone book, Alchemised is just not good.
