Lately I've read a lot of (good) books that I couldn't wait to get to the ending of, to see what would happen – more mystery and plot-driven books obviously. I enjoyed them all very much but could use a change. The last page-turner I finished was Oryx & Crake and I thoroughly enjoyed it and plan to read the next two books, in a little while. I definitely did not want to put off getting to the end, though.

I was thinking about just some books that I put off finishing because I really didn't want that experience of reading them to be over –

    Lonesome Dove

    Pillars of the Earth

    Demon Copperhead

    Pachinko

    Homegoing

    The Count of Monte Cristo

    Bleak House

The Amazing Adventures of Kavalier and Klay

And I want one like that, one that I'm not flipping through breathlessly at the end to find out what happens/happened. I am an incredibly voracious reader and I have read so much of what gets recommended here all the time (um, as evidenced by the above list, sorry), so if you have anything that doesn't get a lot of love here I'd be very interested to hear it.

    Thanks in advance!

    1. Great list!

I bet you’d like Anna Karenina by Leo Tolstoy (the version translated by Constance Garnett)—breathtaking writing

Euphoria by Lily King is fantastic

The Oxford time travel series by Connie Willis, especially The Doomsday Book—they start out a little dense but by the end you don’t want to leave the fictional world she builds

The David Raker series by Tim Weaver is incredible.

If you’re into horror, try some of Stephen King’s novels. Misery, IT, Salem’s Lot, The Shining etc.. are all unputdownable.

Ive never read a Salman Rushdie book that didn’t make me feel like this. I’ve read five now, most recently The Ground Beneath Her Feet.

Hamnet by Maggie O’Farrell, Circe by Madeline Miller, Franny and Zooey by J. D. Salinger, Against the Loveless World by Susan Abulhawa.
