Love me a good romance, but I get tired of every main character being stunningly, movie star gorgeous. I want a romance between two people who don’t turn heads but find each other irresistible. Their physical flaws are addressed and accepted, even loved.
And no, I don’t mean “he has a crooked smile” or “she has a lot of freckles she hates.” I don’t want a self deprecating MC who thinks they look ridiculous but then every character they interact with is obviously stunned by their beauty. I want to read about normal people falling in love with someone that they weren’t instantly wildly attracted to. I’m bored with first meetings where they lock eyes with “the hottest man I’ve ever seen” or “a woman who clearly just stepped out of the cover of a magazine.”
Let them meet and find each other cute, but nothing too special, until they start getting to know each other.
The spicier, the better. 🥵

The House in the Cerulean Sea by TJ Klune—zero spice however.
