Agh I can't edit the title but I meant *any book. It doesn't have to be sci-fi/fantasy but I had to add flair and these are the genres it's most likely to appear. I know it's super specific and obscure but it's a trope I like! Actually I can't think of an example outside of fanfiction…

This is such a good trope. Less about the betrayal itself and more about having to sit in it after.
The Traitor Baru Cormorant kind of lives in that space. Not exactly stuck physically the whole time but definitely trapped in the consequences of what she did.
Also maybe The First Law books, especially with certain characters where they can’t really escape what they’ve become even if they wanted to.
Anxious people by fredrik backman. Bank robber takes hostages and regrets it.
Kill creatures by Rory power. The main character killed her friends and then has to try and act normal around the one living friend and the tension just builds and builds.
