I really liked The Story of Painting by Sister Wendy Beckett.
The Story of Painting was originally published in 1997 and presents an overview of 800+ years of Western art history, discussing various periods and artists.
Sister Wendy Becett was a nun who lived in seclusion on the grounds of a Carmelite monastery in Norfolk, England. She came to public attention in the early 90s thanks to a series of documentaries on the BBC that featured her going around various museums and discussing great works of art. She passed away in 2018.

I really liked Caravaggio, by art historian Andrew Graham Dixon; a scholarly but very readable biography of this fascinating artist, with colour plates of all his paintings.
