I think I'm drawn to stories with large-scale mysteries – where the way the world itself works is part of the unfolding plot.

I think this is why I like a lot of Brandon Sanderson's novels, or hard sci-fi like Project Hail Mary.

(I'm *not* into anything that could be classified as horror, or even particularly 'grimdark', though).

The Giver was like this for me. It’s marketed to young adults, but I very much enjoyed it.

    2. Scholomence and Uprooted, both by Naomi Novik? (Unrelated). There’s mysteries involved in the dark magic school and the evil forest, respectively.

    3. Embassytown and The City & the City by China Mieville

The Family Tree by Sheri S. Tepper

The Last One and The Chamber by Will Dean
