I've been thinking about "Moby-Dick" a lot lately, specifically the sections where Melville just sits with the whale. The anatomy chapters, the descriptions of whaling, the sense of the ocean as this immense, unknowable space. There's a meditative quality to those parts that I haven't found elsewhere.
I'm looking for other novels that center on whales or whaling. Not looking for a retread of the Ahab story, but books that treat whales with the same kind of gravity and fascination. Fiction only. What's out there?
