Hello Reddit readers. I’m in a weird place right now. I’ve gotten some test results back and there is something something precancerous but we won’t know more until we do another procedure and then get pathology back. Worst case scenario is some kind of organ removal… at least it’s not a vital one? That timeline is a couple weeks and in the meantime my brain is demanding escapism for coping. I’ve already re-read a number of my favorites since we’re a couple weeks and a second opinion along in the process.

    Can you help?

I’m a pretty far and wide reader, everything from sci-if to fantasy to YA to non-fiction, mystery to memoir. Looking for every dearly loved book out there.

I’m really looking for something uplifting or at least where the peril my favorite characters is in all works out in the end. As the title says though, I need character development and a plot that isn’t driven by utter stupidity.

    Many thanks.

    1. Have you read 100 years of solitude? Just a hunch but it might be both the thing to escape in and provide perspective on your health issue. Cool book. Zips along.

Piranesi by Susanna Clarke could be good. Unusual and beautiful setting, interesting concept

    3. All Creatures Great and Small by James Herriot is a lovely, charming collection of stories. Sweet, kind, interesting, not perilous, and often funny.

I hope your results come back with only good news. Best of luck.

Tj klune could fit the bill. I really enjoyed under the whispering door. Also Claire pooley. Iona Iversons rules for commuting. Good luck.

    5. Small Miracles by Olivia Atwater. I read it for book club and thought it would be saccharine and annoying. Instead I loved it. Very sweet and with with a great payoff.
