Two that I’ve enjoyed have been The Bigamist by Mary turner Thompson and In my mother’s footsteps by Mona hajjar halaby
Klaus Mann: Turning Point
I really enjoyed these three:
– The Feather Detective by Chris Sweeney
It follows a scientist who pioneered the field of forensic ornithology, solving crimes through studying birds. We follow her career and the interesting plane crashes, murders and other serious crimes that she solves using birds.
– Destiny of the Republic by Candice Millard
A biography of former President James A. Garfield, the book looks not only at his life and career, but the scientific innovations happening at the same time and the way they all come together. Bonus, the book was adapted into a limited series on Netflix called Death by Lightning, so you can watch the show after the book.
– All That Heaven Allows by Mark Griffin
This is a biography of Rock Hudson, a famous actor in the 1960s and 70s. Hudson was a Hollywood golden boy, but behind the scenes he was grappling with being gay and navigating a very homophobic acting landscape. The author doesn’t paint Hudson out as some kind of hero, and I appreciated that he dove into Hudson’s worst moments as much as he did his best.
