Hey everyone! I just finished reading Fahrenheit 451 and was seeking some book recommendations. Although I enjoyed reading Fahrenheit 451, I wanted to dive into something different before I started to read another science-fiction novel. I was looking to read a contemporary coming-of-age novel or a contemporary thriller novel. Any other type of novel recommendation would be welcomed as well! Thank you!

Morning, just a suggestion, (imo) if you are more specific as to what “contemporary” means to you, for example: “last 5 years”, “2001 and newer”…your answers will, hopefully, check more boxes…
Some books…
The Help by Kathryn Stockett (pub. 2009)
Mr. Penumbra’s 24-Hour Bookstore by Robin Sloan (pub. 2012)
Summer Crossing by Truman Capote (pub. posthumously 2005)
…of course if by “contemporary” as in the plot of the novels as opposed to publication…sorry, nothing pops to mind.
Happy hunting and pleasant reading…Cheers
The Outsiders or The Catcher in the Rye
Nice, switching it up after Fahrenheit 451 is a good call
For contemporary coming-of-age, I’d go with Normal People by Sally Rooney – it’s pretty simple on the surface but really nails relationships and that messy growing-up phase. Easy to get into too
The Next One Piece on Substack is one that Ive been liking recently – the character growth and emotional arcs feel very modern and grounded, so it kind of scratches that same itch in a different way
If you want a thriller instead, The Silent Patient by Alex Michaelides is a solid pick – fast-paced, easy to binge, and has a twist that actually lands
And if you want something in between, Tomorrow, and Tomorrow, and Tomorrow by Gabrielle Zevin is great – very contemporary, character-driven, and still has a bit of tension running through it
