Ghosts of Onyx is widely considered one of the best books in the Halo series. It was written by Eric Nylund, who also wrote The Fall of Reach, the first piece of Halo media in the franchise. I read that and First Strike and thought they were incredible. But Ghosts of Onyx? Not so much.

Maybe because it was the narrative being broken up into all these perspectives telling different stories that I couldn’t really get into. There seems to be so much stuff that the broader universe needs to touch upon and so many storylines that just seem to be there to observe the main action, and so many characters that barely stay for all that long and yet completely overstay their welcome.

It’s weird, because there’s nothing the book does that’s wrong per se. There was no character that I hated or plot thread that I thought was done poorly. Maybe the only thing I had issue was I couldn’t really picture what the Forerunner city Nylund described looked like. But other than that, there was nothing I recall thinking was bad or stupid. I just tried three times to complete it, and when I finally did, I was just relieved to be done with it.

I don’t have anything to say past that. I didn’t care for Ghosts of Onyx and wanted to share that with the world.
