Vidas Secas (Barren Lives) written in 1938 by Graciliano Ramos is my favorite Brazilian book because it’s set on a place that I’m very familiar with, with situations that I could relate deeply because I saw similar things with my own eyes, since I used to visit my grandparents every year in rural northeast Brazil.
This book tells the story of a poor family struggling to survive in the harsh, drought stricken backlands of northeastern Brazil. The characters are Fabiano, his wife, two children and his dog by the name of Baleia (whale). The environment that the book is set, is extremely dry and unforgiving. As you can see if you search for “sertão nordestino” in Google images.
This book portrays human suffering, resilience, and the dehumanizing effects of extreme poverty, as well it criticizes social injustice. Besides, I think this book will sure make you cry, I cried a lot. Although I’m not a parameter because I cry even with Adam Sandler books. But I know a lot more people that also cried reading this.
I discovered this book because my Portuguese teacher made us read it as homework, and it was well worth it
