I just finished Attack on Titan (anime) and it honestly hit me harder than I ever could’ve expected. What stuck with me the most wasn’t just the plot, but the characters and how deeply they felt things.
I’m looking for a book that captures that same kind of emotional depth. Stories where characters genuinely care about each other—where their relationships, friendships, and shared struggles feel real. Not surface-level “they’re friends,” but the kind where you can feel the weight of what they mean to each other.
I also really liked how AOT handles morality. Nothing is black and white. Everyone has a reason for what they do, even when it’s messed up. Characters struggle with identity, guilt, purpose, and feeling trapped by things they can’t control. It felt very human.
Another big thing for me is love—not just romance, but connection in general. The kind where characters are each other’s “home,” where there’s loyalty, sacrifice, and unspoken understanding. That dynamic between characters like Eren, Mikasa, and Armin really stuck with me.
I’m not really looking for something that’s purely fantasy in the sense of “cool powers and chosen ones.” I’m more interested in grounded, character-driven stories where the emotions feel real and earned. AoT really broke my heart but it was the most human i’ve felt in a long time. It was beautiful
If you know any books that gave you that same kind of feeling, I’d really appreciate it.
