My mother is dying from cancer and I’m caring for her. I’ve never lost anyone as an adult..so the thought of losing her and watching her go, feels crushing. Anything that has a focus on anticipatory grief, caregiving etc..especially in the context of cancer and loss of Mum. Thank you so much

    1. Sorry you’re going through this. Are you only looking for nonfiction?

Crying at H Mart is a memoir about the author losing her mother to cancer.

Memorial Days by Geraldine Brooks. She performs the audiobook herself, which is lovely.

The End of Your Life Book Club by Will Schwalbe is a memoir following a son caring for his mother while she goes through chemo for pancreatic cancer and the way they bond over books through the experience. It’s been a while since I’ve read it, but I remember it being lovely. I listened to it on my drives to/from radiation and it was the right mix of light and heavy for that moment, anyway. It might be a good one to check out.

As Long As You Need by J.S. Park is my favorite book about grief, but it is a lot heavier. It is a book that offers permission to grieve. (I would check out a quick list of content warnings on that one though– I found it helpful to read during a really hard period of time, but it does cover a lot of tough topics.)

(Also, for whatever it is worth, sending you a hug from a stranger on the internet. I hope whatever book you end up picking up brings you comfort.)

    4. Condolences for what you (and your mom) are going through.
