I am looking for literary fiction that takes place in Italy. Specifically, I’m looking for books that will help me understand Italian culture!

The Name of the Rose by Umberto Eco is set in medieval Italy, so not that relevant for current culture.

The Leopard, by Tomasi di Lampedisa, a historical novel about the risorgimiento might be better suited for that.

    2. The Betrothed – Manzoni

      The Decamerone – Bocaccio

The Divine Comedy – Dante (needs commentary)

Last Summer in the City – Calligarich

      Tomasi di Lampedusa

      Primo Levi

      Luigi Pirandello

      Giorgio Bassani

      Elena Ferrante’s Neapolitan novels

      some of Umberto Eco

    3. The Italians by Luigi Barzini, it’s set in the 1960s but worth the time.
I’m partial to Alberto Moravia myself, but I know he’s not to everyone’s liking.
