I'm currently reading Midnight in Chernobyl and have discovered that I'm really into this kind of narrative (loved the HBO series as well), although obviously non-fiction in this case, extends to fiction as well. Particularly in video games and shows. I loved playing SOMA and trying to piece together clues as to what went wrong and similar games. I loved the mystery in the show Dark trying to unravel what happened to cause the disaster the show is centered around.
I've read Crichton's Andromeda Strain, Jurassic Park, and Sphere while those are great books, it's not quite the vibe I'm looking for (though Sphere is similar I guess). I like the idea of the accident having already happened, and we're following the point of view of someone investigating what happened.
