Hi everyone! I used to be an avid reader when I was younger, and now at 30 I’m trying to get back into reading after a few tough years.
I’ve realised I’ve become really picky with what I read. Things I used to enjoy just don’t hit the same anymore, so I’m trying to find books that fit where I am in life now.
I’m looking for fiction recommendations, preferably:
– Real-life / contemporary settings
– Romance maybe, but nothing cringey or overly sexual (more grounded, emotional, slow-burn)
– Themes around healing, personal growth, mental/emotional journeys
– I don’t mind heavier topics — just nothing overly fluffy or shallow
– Character-driven stories over plot-heavy ones
– Would also be open to characters dealing with chronic illness / physical struggles
What I don’t enjoy:
– Fantasy / sci-fi
– Crime & mystery (used to, but not anymore)
– War / heavy history
– Memoirs (also used to read a ton of these)
Things I do enjoy:
– Realistic relationships
– Starting over / life transitions
– Honest conversations
– Subtle, meaningful storytelling
Open to anything that made you feel something and stayed with you.
Thank you!

Based on what you described, definitely try “The Seven Husbands of Evelyn Hugo” – it’s got that emotional depth and character growth you’re looking for without being too heavy on romance stuff. Also maybe “Lessons in Chemistry” which has this amazing slow-burn relationship and deals with starting over in life 😂
Both really stayed with me after reading and have those honest conversations between characters that hit different. The healing themes are woven in naturally without being too obvious about it 💀
