I recently read The Haunting of Hill House by Shirley Jackson. I picked it up because I was in the mood for a horror thriller. After reading The Silent Patient by Alex Michaelides, I wanted to explore something a little deeper or more intense.
I came across amazing reviews for this book. Some people even called it one of the best horror novels ever written, so naturally, I was drawn to it.
But honestly, it didn’t grab me the way I expected.
In the beginning, I thought maybe it’s just a slow build and the real horror will kick in later. So I kept reading, expecting things to escalate. But instead, it felt like the entire book was just… building up.
And then suddenly, it ended.
I was left feeling confused and a bit disappointed. It felt very open-ended, like there were so many unanswered questions. I kept wondering what really happened with the experiment, and what became of the participants afterward.
Maybe I went in with the wrong expectations, but I never felt that “hook” or tension I was hoping for.
Did anyone else feel this way? Or is this one of those books where the impact is more subtle and psychological?
Would love to hear your thoughts and some good suspense thriller recommendations.
