I am looking for fiction suitable for undergraduates, especially first year students, in which the myths of the perfect house/home/neighborhood are central. I would love something that speaks to or intersects with the cultural obsession with homes as status, security, self-expression, or transformation, including the kinds of ideas that show up in HGTV type shows. Or it could be about darker realities of redlining, gentrification, and displacement. I am considering Best Offer Wins by Marisa Kashino. It’s got the right themes about obsession with the perfect house, house as status and a marker of upward mobility. But it may not be relatable to 18-19 year old college students. I have also just requested When No One is Watching by Alyssa Cole, but haven’t yet read it. Looks promising though. I would love to hear thoughts and suggestions.
