I’ve been on a bit of a Hermann Hesse streak lately, and I realized what I’m really drawn to is not just the plot, but that very specific inner atmosphere his books create. I love novels that feel like a spiritual and psychological journey at the same time — introspective, poetic, philosophically alive, and deeply concerned with inner transformation.

What I especially admire in Hesse is how he treats development not as simple “growth,” but as tension: between the social self and the inner self, reason and longing, discipline and surrender, individuality and belonging. His books often feel like they’re asking whether becoming yourself is a kind of liberation, or a wound you learn to carry more consciously.

So I’m looking for recommendations for novels in a similar vein: poetic, introspective, psychologically sharp, philosophical, and ideally with a slight touch of spirituality or metaphysical searching. Not necessarily religious — more like books that take the soul seriously.

I’m especially interested in novels where the inner life matters as much as the external plot. Classics or modern books are both welcome. Which authors or titles would you recommend?
