Deranged by Harold Shechter, the story of Albert Fish, a disgusting serial killer who abused children and did unfathomable things to himself as well

the road by cormac mccarthy had me triple checking my locks for weeks. something about that post-apocalyptic father and son wandering through ash-covered wasteland just gets under your skin in ways you don’t expect. working night shifts as security didn’t help either – every shadow looked like one of those cannibalistic gangs from the book. the way mccarthy writes without quotation marks makes the dialogue feel so raw and immediate, like you’re right there with them scrounging for food. still gives me chills thinking about that basement scene.
