I know that there have been grimdark recommendations for people who love the soulsborne games. I’m one of them and ive read a few that were great!

But there is one aspect that is missing that I can’t quite find and that is how the Fromsoft games make their world building and lore a puzzle. It’s never direct. Are there any books like this? Where the world and the way of things is kind of a mystery to solve or work to understand?

    I hope that makes sense.

    1. The Broken Earth trilogy by N.K. Jemisin might scratch that itch – the world reveals itself in layers and you’re constantly piecing together what actually happened to break everything. Also check out Book of the New Sun by Gene Wolfe, that one’s famous for making readers work hard to understand what’s really going on beneath surface.

Both have this thing where you realize later that early details meant something completely different than what you first thought.
