I’ve noticed a lot of stories either ignore short characters or turn them into comic relief, but I want books where being short isn’t a punchline, and they still kick ass. Think characters who are clever, brave, or cunning, and whose height is just one aspect of their personality.

Are there any novels, fantasy, sci-fi, or even contemporary stories where short characters are central, heroic, or just fascinating in their own right? Recommendations that make you root for them are exactly what I’m after.

the hitchhiker’s guide has arthur dent who’s pretty average height but ford prefect is described as shorter and he’s definitely one of the cooler characters in that series

Sean Dillon, the spy-assassin in Jack Higgins novels, is described as being a short-statured, unassuming man.

And detective Hercule Poirot, Agatha Christie’s hero, is also a small man.

Also, the hobbits and dwarves in Tolkien’s works, while sometimes providing humor, are brave and courageous.
