I usually read big lengthy epic fantasies with a few standalone books here and there to act as a palate cleanser after an exhausting read. I just finished the Farseer Trilogy recently so looking for a smaller book to give myself a break. Here are some of the previous books I read and enjoyed for this purpose, in no particular order:

    • A Good Girl's Guide to Murder
    • Queen's Gambit
    • Piranesi
    • Project Hail Mary
    • The Martian
    • Moneyball
    • The Murder of Roger Ackroyd
    • The Godfather
    • Tress of the Emerald Sea
    • The Three Body Problem

      Here are some easy reads:
      The wedding people,
      Small things like these,
      A man called Ove.

    2. Three by John Scalzi:

***The Kaiju Preservation Society*** is ‘a common man put into uncommon circumstances’. It’s fun and adventuresome.

***Redshirts*** is a satire of space-opera from the point-of-view of ‘expendable’ crew.

More high-tech than sci-fi but ***Starter Villain*** is the most entertaining book I’ve read recently. It’s a spoof of the early James Bond movies. A substitute teacher inherits his estranged uncle’s villainy which comes complete with a secret volcanic lair.

Yahtzee Croshaw’s ***Will Save the Galaxy For Food*** follows a space pilot scrounging a living after being put out of work by technology advances. The protagonist is a mashup of Han Solo and Crocodile Dundee.
