This one has been on my read list for a very long time. As someone who grew up in rural Alabama I was highly attracted to themes it seemed to present at least in the trailer for the show. But usually I read the books before viewing the adaptions. But I've found the writing style kinda of subpar in the early chapter. Maybe it's just the protagonist but to me it feels like it was written by like a school project. Like the way she just glosses over very important stuff and I feel like she has hardly a reaction. Like a kid was murdered and her hometown and she has to go back and she just is kinda like "ok" I feel like. Or when she's talking to the sheriff. Is it just Camille as a character that's like that?

Yeah the protagonist is supposed to be emotionally detached and fucked up, thats literally her entire thing, she dissociates from trauma and that reflects in the narration style
Have you ever read a book where you felt the writing got better as it went on?
it’s been years since i read it but isn’t it the point that she’s a deeply traumatized character who doesn’t view these events the same way someone else would?
Watch the HBO miniseries. Warning though it’s longer than reading the book lol
‘She just glosses over stuff that seems very important’ is literally a clue for the whole book that you just spelled out. You’re mixing up certain off notes about the character with bad writing. They are intentional.
