Hi, I'm a native English speaker but I want to buy a gift for a friend who's recently started practicing English. I've enjoyed reading kids books in my TL so I want to support him by getting him a book in his favorite genre, Mystery, but I don't know the genre too well. I had considered gifting him The Last Hope School for Magical Delinquents, as I enjoyed it and it's kinda mystery-adjacent, but both the vocabulary and syntax seem a bit high for someone whose never read a book in English before.
I read the excerpt of The House with a Clock in its Walls on amazon and it does seem to be a much easier read. I've never read it before so I don't know how interesting it would be for an adult or if there's hidden difficulties that might discourage him.
