I’m looking for that subtle, creeping kind of tension where nothing is obviously wrong at first, but there’s this growing feeling that something isn’t right. Not necessarily horror, more like psychological unease that builds over time.
Any books that do this well without relying on big twists or cheap shock?

Never let me go by Kazuro Ishiguro may fit the bill. It’s a quiet dystopia thats written as a memoir following teenagers through high school. I wasnt a huge fan but lots of people like it
I’m Thinking of Ending Things by Iain Reed
Oh do I have an author for you ! Robert Aickman, the absolute master of liminal unsettling stories; here’s one expertly read to see if you like his style https://youtu.be/FkKdFYT-gUk?is=-1sTFkURi-u7pzHY
I also love the story ‘The unsettled dust’
