I used to be a big reader but have fallen off badly, and I want back in. I’m not looking for something slow or literary — I need a book that grabs me by the collar from page one and doesn’t let go.
Genres I’m drawn to: military fiction, espionage, spy thrillers, mystery, sci-fi — anything with pace and tension. But here’s the thing — I don’t just want pure popcorn. I want something that also makes me think. The kind of book that is propulsive and addictive but has enough intelligence behind it that you feel genuinely rewarded at the end.
Could be a classic of the genre or something recent. A series opener is fine too, as long as the first book stands on its own.
What’s the one book in this space that absolutely consumed you?

Legend (Marie Lu) is good for military fiction/spy thriller
Circadian Algorithms
Foul Lady Fortune by Chloe Gong – a spy and an assassin go undercover to investigate a murder; some scifi/fantasy, too, bc the assassin is sort of immortal after an experiment. Part of a duology.
Dark Matter by Blake Crouch
Altered Carbon by Morgan
The Hunter by Tom Wood (assassin/spy thriller)
Dungeon Crawler Carl. Weird dystopian sci-fi that’s a super fun easy read.
