    Hello!

As per the title I'm looking for some horror novels which are actually horror. I've just finished The September House and while I liked it I found the horror part not prominent and horrific enough. I also find Stephen King quite boring.

Really liked Patrick McGrath's and most of Edith Wharton's short stories and I loved House of Leaves.

I want to read something and actually be scared.

    Any suggestions?

    1. I read primarily horror, weird lit, and speculative fiction. September House is delightful but sort of “cozy horror” in some ways.

I’d love to recommend books but it would depend on what scares you. I found The Shining to have some genuinely scary moments, for example.

What are some books that have been scary to you in the past? You may also want to try horrorlit

Try In The Miso Soup by Ryu Murakami. Also i recently read Exiles by Maison Coile. Both are creepy and because they’re only around 200 pages there is no mucking around. I love Stephen King but don’t always want 500 pages of small town America before a scare

      The Auctioneer, by Joan Samsom

      Harvest Home, by Thomas Tryon

      The Ruins, by Scott Smith

The Cellar, by Minette Walters (it’s really dark mystery but close to horror – a page turner)

The Exorcist, by William Peter Blatty
