just finished Last of the Mohicans and while all the characters were one dimensional and without development (to say nothing of a meandering, pointless plot), the setting of the primordial North American forest was awesome and felt like a character unto itself

what books have you come across with a similar setting?

      The shining

      Wuthering heights

      Rebecca

      The beach

      The secret history

Honestly a lot of stuff by du maurier or king could work

I mean the best part of Harry Potter is the setting. Characters are second and plot is dead last. But then again, the author is coocoo for cocoa puffs.

      City of Saints and Madmen

      Annihilation

Honestly, a lot of stuff by Jeff Vandermeer works here.

North Woods by Daniel Mason. Primordial forest from colonial era to present day.

I haven’t read it, but based on what I’ve heard, I bet *The Hunchback of Notre Dame* would fit this.
