I run a book club, and we do a different genre every month. I usually put together a bunch of options for each genre, and everyone votes on them, and we read our fave.

So, this year, we did a Beach Read (You Are Here by David Nicholls), True Crime (Joe Cinque’s Consolation by Helen Garner), a comedic book (Based on a True Story by Norm MacDonald – this wasn’t so popular), a classic (Wuthering Heights by Emily Brontë) and we’re about to do a historical fiction (Lavinia by Ursula K Le Guin) and a sci-fi (TBD – voting now).

I plan a few books out so that people can get on wait lists at libraries and because some people read every second book. So I’m just starting to put together a list for our next book after sci-fi.

The genre is contemporary fiction, mostly set in the last 30 years (up to 50 at a push). I would love love love some suggestions from all of you! What have been your best contemporary reads?

Some parameters: we usually try to pick books around the 300 page mark. Less is fine. If it’s more, 400pp max. Also, for this genre we prefer them to be well-written, well-regarded books as opposed to the more popcorn reads (we do those as a separate genre). That doesn’t mean they have to be depressing! LOL! Just reasonably high quality in terms of writing.

Please and thank you! Can wait to hear your recommendations!
